Archaeologists have unveiled a stunning 1,800-year-old mosaic in the ancient city of Zela, located in modern-day Tokat, Turkey. The mosaic includes the ancient Greek word “Τρύφη” (Tryphe), which translates to “luxury and abundance” in the context of the time. This significant find was made at the historic site where Julius Caesar is believed to have declared his famous phrase, "veni, vidi, vici" ("I came, I saw, I conquered").
The ancient city of Zela played a crucial role in Julius Caesar’s military campaigns in Asia Minor. It is here that Caesar made his historic declaration after defeating the Pontic king, Pharnaces II. The discovery of the mosaic not only highlights the region's rich cultural heritage but also strengthens the connection to one of history's most famous figures. This archaeological find is expected to attract more visitors to Tokat, enhancing the local tourism industry and furthering the understanding of ancient Greek and Roman history.
