Dara Wins Eurovision 2026 with Bulgarian-Inspired Hit "Bangaranga"
Dara, representing Bulgaria, won Eurovision 2026 with her song "Bangaranga" after receiving the most public votes. The catchy melody draws on Bulgarian tradition.
The music and lyrics of "Bangaranga" were composed by Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Darina Yotova, Cristian Tarcea, and Dimitris Kontopoulos.
The word "Bagaranga" is borrowed from Jamaican slang and refers to a joyful commotion or rebellion. Dara explained that the sentiment behind the song is about choosing love over fear, according to AFP reports. She sees it as an anthem of celebration and emancipation, as noted by News.ro.
Bulgarian Tradition
Despite its semantic origins outside Bulgaria, "Bangaranga" is deeply rooted in Bulgarian culture. The song's title is also inspired by the ancient Kukeri ritual, where men dressed in costumes adorned with heavy bells and wooden masks of animals drive away evil spirits through noise and frenetic dancing.
Dara, 27, successfully conveyed the frenetic atmosphere of the song on stage with her choreography, which liberated the bodies of the performers.
"My work means being on stage, opening my heart and shining with all my heart. The results are decided by people, not me, but that makes me so happy," she said during the lengthy scoring process. Thanks to "Bangaranga," Dara secured a position ahead of the controversial representatives of Israel and Romania.
Bulgaria, which did not participate in Eurovision for the past three years due to financial reasons, will host the next contest.
This is a historic win for Bulgaria, and Dara's blend of tradition and innovation is a game-changer! Will Bulgaria's victory inspire more Balkan artists to step up their game at Eurovision? Let's see what the future holds!
