A video from a Croatia Airlines flight that veered off the runway in Split shows passengers screaming in fear. The incident occurred on Saturday during the plane's takeoff from Split to Frankfurt. The Airbus A220-300 ended up on a grassy area outside the runway, with minor damage to the nose landing gear and the left engine. No injuries were reported, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Agency has launched an investigation.
In the video, a passenger can be heard repeating "Oh mein gott!" ("Oh my God!") in German, while the cabin echoes with screams and panicked cries from passengers who realized something was amiss.
The lead investigator of aviation accidents, Darko Petrin, stated that the cause of the incident is still under investigation. The plane veered left during takeoff and ended up on the grassy area outside the paved runway. Technical analyses are ongoing to determine the cause.
Petrin confirmed that the on-site investigation is complete, but key analytical tasks, including data analysis from the so-called black boxes, are still in progress. The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) have been retrieved and are under analysis. The cause of the incident is expected to be determined within a few months.
Minimal Damage to the Aircraft
Petrin emphasized that no passengers or crew members were injured. The Airbus A220-300 sustained minor damage to the nose landing gear and left engine. Discussions with the crew will take place in the coming days, and the aircraft manufacturer and other expert institutions will be involved in the investigation to gather all relevant data.
