The Cage Awaits a Legend

The air in Belgrade crackles with anticipation. Fight Nation Championship (FNC) has thrown down the gauntlet for FNC 31 on May 30, and the pre-fight press conference wasn't just about the main event between Aleksandar "Joker" Ilić and champion Đani Barbir. It was about ghosts. It was about glory. It was about Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović.

Promoter Dražen Forgač opened the mic with a quote from Balkan Spy: "The switchboard can make a mistake once, but not a hundred times." He then dropped the bomb that shook the room. Forgač confirmed he has spoken to the 52-year-old legend. "I called him. He said he’s practicing high kicks. The chances of his return are real," Forgač declared. "It would be an honor just for him to step into the FNC cage."

Can the Legend Still Strike?

Cro Cop retired in January 2017, citing health issues and the brutal demands of MMA. But the silence has been broken. For years, rumors have swirled, fueled by the team of FNC Heavyweight Champion Hatef Moeil. The Iranian-German fighter, known as "Boss," has been linked to a dream matchup with Filipović. Moeil, 39, holds a 17-4 record and has been undefeated since a technical knockout loss to Marcin Wojcicki in 2018. He captured the FNC title in February 2026 by defeating Ivan Vitasović in Munich.

Is a fight realistic? Skeptics point to the hurdles: Filipović’s massive purse demands and the physical toll of returning after a seven-year hiatus at age 52. Yet, the Diaković brothers from Germany’s UFD Gym, who train Moeil, have been pushing for this bout for months. If it happens, it could sell out a Croatian stadium. One man alone can fill that space. The question isn’t just if Cro Cop can fight. It’s if the world is ready to watch him again.
