A controversial incident occurred today during the third set of an ATP tournament match in Rome between Italian Janik Sinner and Russian Daniil Medvedev, as Sinner refused to continue the match despite the main umpire, Orelli Tort, stating there were no issues with the conditions.
The rain was the cause of the disruption at the score of 6:2, 5:7, 4:2 for Sinner, as it started to pour heavier during Medvedev's serve. At the advantage for the Russian, Sinner likely realized he wouldn’t be able to play safely and approached the umpire to inform her that he would no longer play.
The Italian claimed he would "slip on the line," and Orelli Tort assured everyone that the conditions were suitable to continue the match. However, after some discussion, the match was suspended.
The French umpire maintained that it was acceptable to play in such conditions and urged Sinner to return to the court, but he refused. She then called for a supervisor, and it was decided that all players should head to the locker rooms.
Daniil Medvedev did not make much of a fuss about the decision and smiled as he went to the locker room. The match between Sinner and Medvedev will resume tomorrow.
