Ruined scenes at the biggest derby of Slovenia's championship, which has become more about prestige than performance, as both Maribor and Olimpija are far from their best positions, and even farther from European competition. The match was halted in the 52nd minute with Olimpija leading 1-0 after their goalkeeper, Matavž Vidovšek, was struck by a projectile and was left lying before the home fans.
"They started throwing me so-called Roman candles. I was hit in the ear; it was noisy and started smoking, I couldn’t continue. Fireworks for atmosphere, that's all fine, but if they aim at me, the player, that's inappropriate. If they hit my eye, I would be blinded. That’s not acceptable," said Vidovšek after the match.
Referee Aleksandar Matković initially paused the game due to Maribor fans throwing objects in the 34th minute, and then definitively stopped it at the beginning of the second half. Olimpija's lead was scored by former Dinamo player Antonio Marin, his eighth league goal of the season.
The match should have been recorded as a 3-0 victory for Olimpija, moving them above Maribor to fourth place, but this position won't grant them European play as one spot is reserved for the cup winner, which is contested by the second-division team Grosuplje and the seventh-placed Aluminij, and the third-placed Bravo has seven points more with two matches to go.
