Georgi Petrov and Simona Staynova achieved a double gold in the 100m and 200m races at the 48th "New Stars" athletics competition in Sofia. After securing their initial victories in the 100m, both athletes went on to claim gold in the 200m. Petrov set a personal best of 21.57 seconds (+0.4 m/s) to win first place among men, followed by Dimitar Hristov with 21.85 seconds and Radin Valkov with a personal best of 22.03 seconds.
In the women's division, Staynova dominated the 200m race, securing the top position with a personal best of 25.17 seconds (+0.8 m/s). Silvi Ivanova came in second with a personal record of 27.00 seconds, and Ashli Yeni finished third with 27.77 seconds.
Young athletes under 20 years old also delivered impressive performances. Dejan Cvetanov won the 200m with a personal best of 21.56 seconds (-0.2 m/s), faster than the men's winner. Yoan Kamenev placed second with a personal record of 21.89 seconds, and Viktorio Mirchev also set a career-best time of 22.23 seconds.
Among the girls under 20, Tsvetelina Mateeva was the fastest with 25.84 seconds, followed by Raya Plamenova with 25.91 seconds and Siana Georgieva with 26.28 seconds, all setting personal best times.
This is a huge win for Bulgarian athletics! Seeing young talent like Dejan Cvetanov performing at such a high level is a great sign for the future. Can we expect more of these dominant performances at upcoming international meets?
