The Bulgarian women's national volleyball team delivered a spirited performance against the Olympic and world champions from Italy, though they began their campaign in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League with a 0-3 defeat (22-25, 16-25, 25-27). This match marked the second debut for head coach Marcelo Abondanza, who guided his young roster to a competitive display against his native country, highlighting the squad's significant potential for the future.
A Competitive First Set
Bulgaria held their own against the Italians in the opening stages of the first set. Borislava Saykova and Alexandra Milanova proved early on that the world champions would not have an easy time. Abondanza frequently rotated the lineup, giving many players a chance to shine. Captain Zhana Todorova and libero Mila Pashkuleva made several crucial digs that frustrated the opposition. The momentum shifted at 11-11 when Italy showcased their superior class. Both teams struggled with service reception, but Bulgaria stayed close until 20-22 before Italy closed out the set 25-22.
Italy Takes Control
The second set started evenly but Italy quickly seized control. When the "Azzurre" led 10-5, it became clear that Bulgaria would struggle to keep up. The Italian block was nearly impenetrable. Despite this, Bulgaria managed to close the gap slightly. However, after trailing 16-12, Bulgaria conceded five consecutive points, effectively ending the set. The final score for the second game was 25-16.
A Thrilling Third Game
The third set was the most intense. Bulgaria started with a 4-0 lead, but Italy quickly leveled at 5-5. The game then went point-for-point. Italy's Ekaterina Antropova dominated with blocks and attacks. Crucially, Bulgaria remained competitive against the world's top team for the majority of the match, harassing Italy with excellent defense and blocks until the final moments.
Hope surged with a fantastic block by Nikolina Nikolova to tie the score at 23-23, prompting Italy's coach Julio Velasco to call a timeout. Following the break, both teams engaged in a spectacular rally, and Micaela Stoyanova brought Bulgaria their first set point. Although they missed the conversion, a tense point-for-point exchange ensued. The set reached 25-25, but Italy won the next two points to seal the victory.
Alexandra Milanova was the top scorer for Bulgaria with 12 points, while Micaela Stoyanova added 10. For Italy, Ekaterina Antropova finished with 14 points. Bulgaria's next match is against the Dominican Republic on June 5.
италия все пак по-опитна е и това се видя в блокадите tbh. българките обаче не се предадоха и третия сет беше супер близък. нямам търпение за доминиканската република следващата седмица...
