Top Seeds Advance in Straight Sets
The opening day of the French Open at Roland Garros saw several top-ranked players secure comfortable victories to reach the second round. Eighth-seeded Mirra Andreeva demonstrated her dominance on clay, defeating France’s Fiona Ferro 6-3, 6-3. The 19-year-old Russian, who has historically performed well on the sunny courts of Philippe Chatrier, closed out the match on the first match point after Ferro committed her 24th unforced error.
Swiss star Belinda Bencic, the 11th seed and 2020 Olympic champion, also advanced without much resistance. Bencic defeated Austria’s Sinja Kraus with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-3, maintaining her high level of play as she looks to make a deep run in Paris.
Kostyuk’s Emotional Victory Amidst Personal Tragedy
While Andreeva and Bencic focused solely on the match, 15th seed Marta Kostyuk played under incredibly heavy emotional circumstances. Hours before stepping onto the court, a missile strike occurred near her family home in Kyiv, Ukraine. Kostyuk received distressing photos showing damage to the house where her mother, sister, and aunt were staying.
Despite the trauma, the 23-year-old Ukrainian defeated Russia-born but Spain-representing Oxana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-3. Kostyuk admitted she was terrified before the match, fearing for her family’s safety. "I felt sick just thinking that if it had been 100 meters closer, I probably wouldn’t have my mother and sister today," Kostyuk told reporters.
She described the match as one of the most difficult of her career, revealing she had cried all morning. "I am incredibly proud of myself. Of course, I am happy to be in the second round, but all my heart and all my thoughts are with the people of Ukraine," she added.
Dramatic Comebacks and Other Results
The day featured thrilling drama elsewhere on the court. American Hailey Baptist saved two match points in the second-set tiebreak before defeating Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova 6-7(7), 7-6(6), 6-2. In another American success, Katie Volynets beat Clara Burel 6-3, 6-1, while Katie McNally eliminated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Other notable results included Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova beating Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-1. Ukraine’s Yuliya Starodubtseva defeated Russia’s Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-1. Poland’s Magda Linette edged Czechia’s Tereza Valentova 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(9), and Magdalena Frech secured a win over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-6(5), 2-1 ret. Britain’s Francesca Jones also advanced after a 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.
