Romanian fighter Alice Ardelean (12-7) secured a win against Brazilian Polyana Viana (13-9) at UFC Fight Night 276 with a unique submission move dubbed the "capsule lock." The move, which has never been seen before in UFC history, was executed in the second round and resulted in Viana tapping out.
Viana initially caught Ardelean in a body triangle from the bottom position, but Ardelean managed to trap Viana’s leg and apply pressure to secure the tap. The Romanian fighter revealed in a post-fight interview with the UFC that she learned the move on Instagram, using it as a backup plan when Viana closed the triangle.
Spontaneous Submission
“Me submitting somebody. Imagine,” Ardelean said. “I had seen this submission on Instagram. It was a backup plan. Because I knew she closes the triangle if she’s in guard. She has a good guard. Caught me with some good elbows from there. And I didn’t know what to do. So I tried that. I’m like, YOLO. And it worked… I don’t even know what it is. I think it’s some calf-slicer or something. I mean she calf sliced herself.”
This spontaneous submission not only secured Ardelean’s third consecutive win but also made history as the first of its kind in UFC.
Who knew a spontaneous Instagram move could make history? Alice Ardelean's "capsule lock" submission is pure genius. Can we see more creativity like this in future fights or is it just a fluke?
