The AEK Athens men's basketball team secured a 78-65 victory over Malaga, advancing to the Basketball Champions League (BCL) final. The game was marked by a strong defensive performance, seasoned players, and a confident mindset.
Following the match, coach Darrick Sacotte was modest about the team's performance, noting that AEK had played better games in the past. However, he acknowledged the significance of this particular match. "We have played better games, but the opponent and the importance of the game made this performance even more impressive," Sacotte said.
The key to AEK's success was their defense. Malaga, known for their fast pace and quick attacks, were stifled by the Athenians. "We played a solid defense, especially in the first half when we kept their score very low," Sacotte explained.
Sacotte also praised the team's offensive strategy, emphasizing the importance of not only marking well but also not giving the opponent easy passes. "With careful attention and the right mindset, we don't give up when the game enters a fast pace, and we have the conditions to return to defense."
The coach highlighted the players' psychological strength. "They have a lot of confidence, and it's crucial in moments like these, when participating in a Final Four, to feel good and believe in yourself."
Recalling last year's experience, Sacotte noted that AEK had come close to the final, but this year, the team appears better prepared. "We have built a lot on last year's experience," he said.
For the upcoming final against Ritas, Sacotte acknowledged the strength of the opponent. "It's certainly a very strong final," he said. AEK heads into the final with the same confidence, strong defense, and players unafraid of the moment that they displayed against Malaga.
