In the first half of May, 18 lives were lost in traffic accidents across Serbia. The Serbian Traffic Police Authority warns that excessive speed and failure to wear seat belts are the primary causes of these tragedies.
Over the past week, 601 traffic accidents occurred on roads in the Republic of Serbia, resulting in seven fatalities and 291 injuries. These alarming figures serve as a serious warning and call to action for all road users.
The situation has been equally alarming since the beginning of the month. From May 1st to May 18th, 18 lives were lost on Serbian roads, including 12 drivers, three passengers, and three pedestrians.
Speed kills, seat belts save lives
Police analyses indicate that excessive speed continues to be the dominant factor in the most severe traffic accidents. On the other hand, many drivers and passengers still neglect basic safety measures.
"Failing to use a seat belt significantly increases the risk of a fatal outcome, both for the driver and passengers in front and back seats," the Ministry of Interior states.
Concerning pedestrian behavior
In addition to driver negligence, authorities are particularly concerned about the improper and unsafe movement of pedestrians in traffic, especially in nighttime and low visibility conditions.
The Traffic Police Authority appeals to all drivers to adjust their speed to road conditions, strictly follow traffic rules, and always use seat belts.
Simultaneously, pedestrians are reminded to use crosswalks for crossing streets, move safely, and ensure their visibility by wearing reflective clothing.
"Road safety is the responsibility of all of us. Save lives - follow the rules," urges the Traffic Police Authority, wishing all citizens safe participation in traffic.
